We need a change of attitude and mindset to transform Ghana, not a military rule – Sociopolitical Expert

Dr. Christopher Ampadu, a sociopolitical expert, has responded to the latest Afrobarometer report indicating a growing number of Ghanaians support military intervention when elected leaders abuse their power.

Addressing the findings, Dr. Ampadu acknowledged Ghana’s history of military governance prior to its adoption of democratic rule. He firmly asserted that a return to military rule is not a viable solution.

He emphasised that corruption and related malpractices were widespread under all past military regimes, just as they have been under democratic administrations. As such, the problem lies not in the system of governance alone, but in the attitudes and behaviours of those within it.

Dr. Ampadu called for a national transformation rooted in a renewed mindset and attitudinal change, stressing that military takeovers cannot resolve the country’s deep-seated challenges. According to him, real change must begin with the people, as human capital is the driving force behind national progress.

He explained that if a country has rigid systems and laws but is populated by individuals who disregard them, meaningful development becomes impossible. For Ghana to move forward, a collective shift in values and attitudes is essential.

Furthermore, Dr. Ampadu highlighted the crucial role of the church in shaping the moral character of citizens. He urged religious institutions to operate with integrity, free from animosity and corruption, in order to properly equip their members to contribute positively to the nation’s future.

He concluded by stressing that the church, as a powerful moral force, must lead by example in cultivating ethical, responsible citizens capable of steering Ghana toward lasting development.
