I’d have been more successful if I did gospel music – Sista Afia

Singer and songwriter Sista Afia believes she would have been more successful than she currently is if she had pursued a career in gospel music.

In an interview on Top FM, the singer stressed that she could have achieved greater success had she pursued a career in the gospel field.

However, she added that she feels fulfilled with her current path because she believes God has placed her exactly where she is meant to be.

Sista Afia disclosed that her journey in music actually began in the church. As a child, she said she sang gospel songs and even recorded a full gospel album when she was just ten years old.

According to her, a man she called Papa Sly, a pastor at Kingdom Light Ministry in Kumasi, played a role in nurturing her talent.

She explained that Papa Sly recognised her potential when she used to sing in his church and decided to take her to a recording studio, where they worked on a seven-track gospel album titled ‘Jesus Christ.’

Although the album was never released, Sista Afia said copies exist in her mother’s house.

“If I was doing gospel, I would have been more successful by now. But I feel like with what I’m doing now, I’m still everywhere. It’s God who has placed us where we are. I was a gospel musician way back when I was a kid. I had a gospel album at the age of ten years. The album is in my mother’s house and the title is Jesus Christ,” Sista Afia said.

The singer recently admitted that despite years of hard work and sacrifices, she feels she may never be a favourite in the music industry.

Speaking in an episode of the Delay Show, Sista Afia said that since she released her 2018 hit song ‘Jeje,’ which featured Shatta Wale, she realised that being a favourite in the industry might never happen for her.
