Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to introduce a policy that will enable Christian leaders to travel to Israel for prayers, similar to how Muslims undertake pilgrimage to Mecca.

He made the promise while addressing party delegates during his campaign ahead of the NPP presidential primaries.

According to Dr Bawumia, the initiative is aimed at ensuring religious balance and inclusiveness, noting that while Muslims have the opportunity to travel to Mecca for spiritual purposes, Christians should also be supported to visit Israel, which holds significant religious importance.

“Vote for me and I will introduce a policy that will support Christians to go to Israel to pray, just as Muslims go to Mecca, because Ghana needs prayers.” he told the delegates.

He explained that the proposal would focus on facilitating organised pilgrimages for Christian leaders, particularly pastors, to Israel as part of efforts to promote faith, unity and national development through spiritual renewal.

Dr Bawumia said religion plays an important role in the moral and social fabric of Ghana, and his administration would recognise and support all major faiths fairly.

The former Vice President is among several aspirants vying for the NPP’s flagbearer position ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, with candidates crisscrossing the country to canvass support from delegates.
