‘I Didn’t Like It’ – KK Sarpong Criticises NPP’s Post-2024 Election Strategy

Veteran New Patriotic Party (NPP) member KK Sarpong has disclosed that he opposed the party’s decision to elect a presidential candidate before restructuring its internal leadership following the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Metro TV, Sarpong said he did not support the approach adopted by the party, arguing that it departs from established tradition and could create internal challenges.

“No, I opposed it. I didn’t like it,” he stated when asked about his position on the party’s post-election direction.

According to him, selecting a flagbearer before reorganising the party’s leadership structures complicates the transition process, as the candidate may be forced to work with an outdated leadership framework.

“We elect the candidate, he comes in, and all the people around him are of the old position,” Sarpong explained. “You then have to go and come back.”

He noted that the party’s traditional approach has always been to first put its internal structures in order before settling on a presidential candidate.

“That has always been the position,” he said.

Despite his reservations, Sarpong acknowledged that the party has already settled on the roadmap and there is little that can be done to reverse it.

“There’s an election on January 31,” he said. “We can’t do anything about it. That’s what the party has decided.”

Turning his attention to the upcoming congress, Sarpong stressed the need for the NPP to elect leaders capable of rebuilding the party after its recent electoral defeat.

Asked what the party should prioritise at the January 31 congress, he said the focus must be on selecting leadership that can lift the party from its current state and reposition it for the future.

“We need to get a leader who can take us from where we are now,” he stated.

Describing the party’s condition as one that requires recovery rather than minor adjustments, Sarpong said the NPP must acknowledge its setbacks and take decisive steps to bounce back.

“We sang solo,” he added. “And we need to get up.”
