The Chairman of Parliamentary select committee on Human Rights, Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim, has called on the public to reject all forms of electoral violence and malpractices, emphasizing that such actions threaten Ghana’s democracy, human rights, and sustainable development.

Hon. Anim, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Kumawu, made the remarks following reports of violence during the Ablekuma North elections held across 19 polling stations on Friday, July 11, 2025.

He stated that electoral violence not only undermines the democratic process but also contravenes both national and international legal frameworks, including Article 25 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which guarantees the right to life, liberty, and personal security.

The MP urged key stakeholders—including the Government, Political Parties, Security Agencies, the National Peace Council (NPC), and the Electoral Commission—to collaboratively develop a robust electoral management system that prevents such incidents.

Hon. Anim also commended the Ghana Police Service for initiating investigations into a police commander who allegedly assaulted a journalist during the elections.

He condemned the assault and reaffirmed the Human Rights Committee’s commitment to defending the rights, freedoms, and dignity of all Ghanaians.
