Chairman Wontumi to appear before CID over Akonta Mining probe

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is expected to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025.

His appearance follows a directive from the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who on Friday, October 3, warned that Wontumi would be arrested if he failed to comply, noting that charges against him have already been signed.

The investigation centers on Akonta Mining Limited, a company reportedly linked to the NPP regional chairman, which is being probed for alleged illegal mining activities.

According to Dr. Ayine, the case had stalled under the previous administration due to concealed dockets, but efforts are now underway to ensure accountability and transparency in the ongoing investigation.

Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, October 5, Andy Appiah Kubi, lawyer for Chairman Wontumi, confirmed that his client would honour the CID’s invitation.

“We have been asked to appear at the Police CID Headquarters in Accra at 10 a.m., and we are fully prepared to do so,” he said.

Mr. Appiah Kubi, however, described the Attorney General’s public warning as unnecessary, stressing that his client has always cooperated with investigators.

“This announcement by the Attorney General surprises me. We respect the invitation and will honour it, but I think the warning that followed was not needed,” he remarked, adding that his client has no intention of disregarding the CID’s invitation.
