It would be difficult for Dr. Bawumia to become President – Lecturer

A lecturer at Valley View University, Professor Lawrence Lowell, has cast doubt over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) chances in the 2028 general elections, saying it would be difficult for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to mount a successful presidential bid.

Speaking during a panel discussion on Oyerepa Breakfast Time with host Kwesi Parker-Wilson, Prof. Lowell argued that the NPP entered the post-2024 political landscape weakened by internal divisions that emerged ahead of its presidential primaries.

According to him, the party’s internal campaign battles damaged its cohesion and credibility, making it harder to reconnect with the electorate.

“It will be extremely difficult for Dr. Bawumia to become President of Ghana because he lacks a convincing message for Ghanaians and has little to use against President John Dramani Mahama,” Prof. Lowell stated.

He referenced Dr. Bawumia’s loss to President Mahama in the 2024 general election, noting that the defeat exposed significant challenges within the NPP, including voter fatigue and dissatisfaction with the party’s messaging.

Prof. Lowell questioned how the party intends to reposition itself ahead of 2028, particularly in crafting a campaign narrative strong enough to challenge an incumbent president.

“I don’t know how they are going to campaign. How will they convince Ghanaians to vote against Mahama?” he asked.
