Wontumi TV Presenter, Akyenkwaa Nana denied bail

The Accra Circuit Court has denied bail to Wontumi TV presenter Akyenkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, who was arrested over on-air remarks allegedly linking former President John Mahama to the recent military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.

Kofi Asare was taken into custody on Tuesday, August 12, after making the comments during a broadcast. Police say the allegations regarding the August 6 crash in the Adansi Akrofoum District of the Ashanti Region were unfounded.

The tragedy has plunged the nation into mourning, with a state funeral for the victims scheduled for Friday, August 15.

In court on Thursday, the presiding judge rejected the defence’s bail request, remanding the accused into police custody to allow for further investigations.

Speaking to Citi News after the ruling, defence counsel Enoch Anhwere Afoakwah criticised the decision as a “miscarriage of justice” and announced plans to appeal the ruling at the High Court.
