Ashongman Estate: One suspect arrested over death of immigration officer

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a prime suspect in connection with the murder of Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah, whose partially burnt body was discovered on Wednesday, July 9, 2025—five days after he was reported missing.

The suspect, identified as Bright Aweh, was apprehended after police investigations linked him to the officer’s disappearance and subsequent death.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Police Service and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Aweh was the last known person to have contacted Amoah before his disappearance. He allegedly invited the officer to a meeting on July 3 at Ashongman Estate, under the pretext of settling a financial debt.

Police revealed that prior to the meeting, Aweh sent WhatsApp images of large bundles of cash to Amoah, purportedly as proof of his readiness to pay back an owed amount. That meeting was the last time the officer was seen alive.

During questioning, Aweh claimed to have handed over GHS 500,000 in cash to Amoah for debt settlement and safekeeping. However, he failed to provide a credible source for the funds and offered conflicting statements, further intensifying police suspicion.

Tragically, Amoah’s body was later found in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area, opposite Comet Estate in Accra. The remains, which had been severely burnt, were identified by family members at the Police Hospital morgue.

The Ghana Police Service is appealing to the public for any information that may assist in the ongoing investigation. Citizens are encouraged to report tips to the nearest police station or contact the emergency lines 18555 or 192.
