NPP’s Adomako Baafi slams government over Chairman Wontumi’s detention
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed outrage over the detention of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Wontumi was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) three days ago and subsequently rearrested by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) after being granted bail.
Lawyer Yaw Adomako Baafi, former NPP’s Communications Director, questioned the basis of Wontumi’s arrest, stating that borrowing $14 million is a civil matter, not a crime. “Even if he borrowed that kind of money, it’s not a crime case; it’s a civil case he can pay,” Baafi emphasized.
Speaking to Oyerepa news reporter Bernard K Dadzie in an exclusive interview, he said “Wontumi’s lawyer informed me that he would be brought here to EOCO this morning. However, I have been here since morning, and there is no sign of him,” Lawyer Adomako.
Lawyer Adomako Baafi urged President Mahama to stop intimidating NPP members and focus on delivering on his promises to Ghanaians, reminding him that power is temporary. “Intimidating NPP members would not bode well for your administration,” he stressed.
Mr. Moses Abor, former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organizer, expressed uncertainty over the charges against Wontumi. Noted that Exim Bank had reportedly withdrawn its case against Wontumi, leaving the party wondering about the actual charges.
He expressed frustration over the stress and uncertainty caused by Wontumi’s detention. “The law is law, but from the past three days that Chairman Wontumi was arrested, the party has been going up and down; the stress we are going through is not the best,” Abor lamented.
Moses Abor urged the party’s executives to take action to revitalize the party. “For how long will we continue to be in the opposition? What are we doing to reignite the party’s spirit? Let’s go back to our people, engage with them, and persuade them to come back to the party.”
