Woman remanded over alleged baby theft at Mamprobi Hospital

The District Court of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Accra has remanded Latifa Salifu in connection with the theft of a four-day-old baby boy from the postnatal ward of Mamprobi Hospital.

Salifu, 33, appeared before the court on Friday, February 20, following her arrest after swift police investigations and public cooperation. She is expected to reappear on March 4, 2026, as investigations continue.

Police reported that on Tuesday, February 17, Abigail Dzikunu, accompanied by Henrita Abe Blessed, informed authorities that an unidentified woman, posing as a nurse, had taken a newborn from the hospital.

The baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, who delivered on February 14, said the woman, dressed in a peach-coloured nurse’s uniform, took the baby under the pretext of administering medication and then disappeared.

The suspect told police that she had delivered at the hospital and was discharged due to lack of care. However, investigations revealed no hospital records to support her claim.

The incident has reignited public concern over security at health facilities, particularly maternity wards, with renewed calls for stricter visitor screening and improved surveillance to prevent similar cases in the future.
