Dr. Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo, Personal Assistant to the National Chief Imam, has expressed concern that Ghanaians are losing their cultural identity due to the influence of social meSpeaking at the 2026 Marhaba Ramadan event at the National Mosque in Accra, Azindoo stated that social media has led Ghanaians to adopt foreign cultures, resulting in a significant erosion of their religious identity.
He noted that this trend has made Ghanaians “systemically victims of foreign cultures”, and urged the country to take steps to preserve its cultural heritage. Azindoo made the call on Ghanaians, particularly the Muslim community, to use the upcoming Ramadan to renew their faith and transform their character.
The Islamic cleric’s statement was made at an event aimed at ushering in the Holy month of Ramadan on the Islamic calendar. He used the opportunity to encourage Ghanaians to reflect on their values and work towards positive change.
Mr. Orhun Kiyci, Hudai Educational Coordinator, explained that the Marhaba Ramadan programme aims to inform the public and Muslim community that Ramadan is approaching, and encourage them to prepare spiritually and internationally.
He emphasized that Ramadan is crucial for Muslims, going beyond fasting to living in harmony with people of other faiths, as directed by Prophet Mohammed. Kiyci highlighted the importance of using Ramadan to foster unity and understanding among people of different backgrounds.
