Singapore names Orchid Hybrid after President Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured in Singapore with an orchid hybrid named after him.
At a ceremony held at the National Orchid Garden within the Singapore Botanic Gardens, the new flower—officially called Vanda John Dramani Mahama—was unveiled. It now joins Singapore’s prestigious “VIP Orchids” collection, which features hybrids dedicated to visiting dignitaries, including heads of state and global leaders.
As part of the event, President Mahama toured the gardens, signed the visitors’ book, and received a briefing on the history of the institution.
The naming of orchid hybrids after distinguished guests is a long-standing Singaporean tradition, regarded as a gesture of goodwill and respect. Orchids are also celebrated in the country as symbols of resilience and transformation—values closely tied to Singapore’s national story.
President Mahama is in Singapore on a three-day state visit, which also includes his participation in the 8th Africa-Singapore Business Forum.
