The Government of Ghana will commence payment of gratuity arrears to retired military personnel on Friday, February 27, 2026, following approval under Constitutional Instrument (CI) 129.
According to a press release from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the payments will cover all retired personnel affected by CI 129, resolving a long-standing issue dating back to 2020. The first tranche is expected to be disbursed by close of business on Friday, with subsequent payments scheduled in phases.
The statement, signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, explained that upon assuming office, the current Military High Command engaged the Ministries of Finance and Defence to review concerns regarding the gratuity formula under CI 129. These consultations resulted in a clearly defined two-year phased implementation plan.
Under the approved arrangement, all personnel who retired from November 2020 will receive arrears calculated according to the revised gratuity formula. Payments will be made in four instalments between February 2026 and December 2027.
A total of 238 officers and 2,155 soldiers are expected to benefit from the exercise. The Armed Forces also confirmed that all future retirements will be processed fully in line with CI 129 to prevent a recurrence of the issue.
The Military High Command expressed gratitude to the government for facilitating the resolution, noting that the move ensures affected personnel receive their full entitlements at the correct rates.
