Baba Jamal wins Ayawaso East by-election

Baba Jamal, the parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has won the Ayawaso East by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, reclaiming the seat for his party.

The by-election was organised to fill the vacancy created by the death of the area’s Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, in January.

Baba Jamal secured a commanding lead over his closest rival, Yusif Ali Baba of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and other contenders in the race. He garnered 10,884 votes, while the NPP candidate polled 4,009 votes. Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda obtained 1,885 votes. Ibrahim Idrissu received 43 votes, and Kanor David secured 104 votes.

In total, 16,928 valid ballots were cast, with 120 rejected votes, bringing the overall turnout to 17,048.

The results closely mirrored projections by research firm Global InfoAnalytics, which had forecast a decisive victory for the NDC candidate. A pre-election survey conducted between February 28 and March 1 projected Baba Jamal to win about 75 per cent of the vote, placing him well ahead of his competitors.

The win consolidates the NDC’s grip on Ayawaso East and marks Baba Jamal’s return to Parliament. He previously served as Member of Parliament for Akwatia and later as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Voting across polling stations was described as peaceful, although turnout was generally low. Electoral officials and security personnel were deployed to maintain order throughout the exercise.

Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn into Parliament in the coming days to represent the people of Ayawaso East and continue the legislative work of his late predecessor.
