Is NPP for Bretuo or Asona? – Abuakwa South MP dismisses claims that Bawumia is not an NPP member
Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has refuted claims circulating within sections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is not a true member of the party.
Some members of the NPP have in recent weeks questioned Dr. Bawumia’s loyalty, alleging that his affiliation with the party is superficial and that he does not share its ideological roots.
However, speaking on the Oyerepa Breakfast Show with Kwesi Parker Wilson, Dr. Agyemang described such claims as baseless and divisive. He stressed that political parties are not family associations or tribal groupings but rather ideological organizations that bring together people who share common political beliefs.
“The NPP is not for the Bretuo, Asona, or any particular clan,” Dr. Agyemang stated. “Political parties are associations of individuals with a collective ideology. If you call someone a ‘stranger,’ then you are implying they don’t share in our ideas — and that is simply not the case with Dr. Bawumia.”
The legislator emphasized that the NPP’s ideology of property-owning democracy and free enterprise welcomes all individuals who believe in personal initiative, freedom, and economic empowerment, regardless of ethnic or regional background.
“Anybody who believes in free enterprise and the ideals of the NPP is part of our family,” he said. “Unless someone is suggesting that the NPP is exclusively for the Ayoko clan — which is a shallow and senseless notion — this discussion shouldn’t even exist.”
Dr. Agyemang urged party members to focus on unity and the party’s vision for national development rather than allowing tribal or factional sentiments to distract from its core mission.
